We are pleased to be bringing you the final 2 Academy events of the year, focussing on Dental Education, but applicable to all healthcare educators. Both events are virtual, free to attend and we encourage all of our Academy members and fellows to join both events.  Please register here.  

The Future of Dental Education, 13 December 2022, 16:00 - 18:00, part of our InSights series, will bring together speakers from policy, practice and research, able to offer a range of perspectives on current challenges and the future of dental education.

Delegates will be privileged to hear from leaders of reform in dental education: the dual qualified (dentistry and medicine) and recently appointed Chief Dental Officer for Wales, Professor Andrew Dickenson, the Postgraduate Dental Dean Kirstie Moons, from Health Education and Improvement Wales, and Dr Jane Luker, Dental Postgraduate Dean HEE SW, Chair of English Dental Deans and Chair of COPDEND. The session will be chaired by Alison Bullock, Professor of Medical and Dental Education at Cardiff University.

The insights they share will be relevant to educators across healthcare settings. The programme will include information-rich discussion and opportunities for delegate questions and responses from speakers, and access afterwards to speaker slides.

Andrew Dickenson is the Chief Dental Officer (Wales). He was formerly the Regional Postgraduate Dean for Midlands and East of England and is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. Andrew has also served as Vice Chair of COPDEND. Kirstie Moons is HEIW Postgraduate Dental Dean and Council Member, General Dental Council. Kirstie has worked in dentistry in Wales her whole career since qualifying as a dental nurse in 1990. She has a long track record of working in Dental Education in Wales, in the Deanery and prior to this in Cardiff Dental School where she was involved in the education and training of all members of the dental team Jane Luker is Acting Medical Director for University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust. She qualified in Dentistry from Kings College, University of London. Following SHO and Registrar posts in London, Bristol and Leeds she obtained her Fellowship in Dental Surgery (RCS Edinburgh) and secured an MRC Training fellowship and Honorary Registrar in Oral Medicine at the University of Bristol Dental Hospital and School. Dr Luker was appointed Consultant in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology at University Hospital Bristol NHS Foundation Trust in 2000. From 2002-2009 Dr Luker was Clinical Director/Lead Doctor for Dental Services. Dr Luker was appointed Deputy Medical Director in September 2008. Dr Luker is a member of council of the British Society of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology, a specialty advisor to the Royal College of Surgeons and currently secretary to the association of British Dental Hospitals and Schools. Alison Bullock is a Professor of Medical and Dental Education at Cardiff University, School of Social Sciences and, since 2009, Director of the Cardiff Unit for Research and Evaluation in Medical and Dental Education. The purpose of the Unit and my main activity is to conduct multidisciplinary research and evaluation of the education and training of healthcare professionals. She has accumulated over 100 peer-reviewed publications and until recently, was Associate Editor of the European Journal of Dental Education. She is currently the Director of Research for the School of Social Sciences.

The InSights event will be followed the next day with the Academy's prestigious Calman Lecture. 

The 2022 Annual Calman Lecture14 December 2022, 17:00 - 18:00 will be given by Professor Barry Quinn, Professor of Restorative Dentistry and Dental Education, University of Liverpool. The prestigious Calman Lecture is given in honour of Sir Kenneth Calman Hon FAcadMEd, one of the founders of the Academy of Medical Educators.

These events represent an excellent opportunity for medical, dental, and veterinary educators to come together to share good practice and the latest innovations in healthcare education and for networking, academic collaboration, and professional development.
