In  March 2009, the Academy of Medical Educators was commissioned by the UK Departments of Health to help define training requirements for educational supervisors in secondary care, and to explore options for their future accreditation and performance review.  The first stage of the project involved scoping the problem, identifying current practice and reviewing the literature.  The comprehensive Stage 1 report has now been approved by the Workforce Directorate of the Department of Health, MMC Programme Board and Medical Education England.

Stage 2 will generate an options appraisal for a national development framework and system for the accreditation and review of educational supervisors.  Stage 2 is expected to output in January 2010.

A working group of the Council of the Academy has been developing a framework for professional development standards for medical educators.  A further draft is now available for download and the Academy welcomes feedback and comments on this latest interim version.

The GMC is consulting on a new edition of Tomorrow’s Doctors. Tomorrow’s Doctors sets the knowledge, skills and behaviour required of UK medical graduates, and also lays down standards for medical schools.  Click on the link below to read the Academy of Medical Educators` response.
