The Academy`s Professional Standards are designed to provide the basis upon which a curriculum for medical educators can be developed. They act as a framework to assist medical educators to work towards excellence and against which professional progression as an educator can be planned, measured and benchmarked against standards that have been agreed by a consensus process with the wider community. They may also be used by healthcare and higher education organisations to identify
the skills and competencies required of those who undertake an educational role.

In  March 2009, the Academy of Medical Educators was commissioned by the UK Departments of Health to help define training requirements for educational supervisors in secondary care, and to explore options for their future accreditation and performance review.  The first stage of the project involved scoping the problem, identifying current practice and reviewing the literature.  The comprehensive Stage 1 report has now been approved by the Workforce Directorate of the Department of Health, MMC Programme Board and Medical Education England.

Stage 2 will generate an options appraisal for a national development framework and system for the accreditation and review of educational supervisors.  Stage 2 is expected to output in January 2010.
