President's welcome

President's welcome

Welcome from the President

Thank you for visiting our website, which is open to all. The AoME was established in 2006. We are a registered charity, and our charitable aims are to improve patient care by providing leadership, promoting standards and supporting all those involved in the broad discipline of medical education, through all stages of a career.

We welcome applications for membership from all aspects of medical education – whether medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy or other branches; whether NHS, University or other sectors; whether clinical or non-clinical. If you spend part or all of your working life in medical education the AoME has relevance to you, and we are keen to grow as large and representative membership as possible. More senior educators can apply for admission to Fellowship. See elsewhere on this site for details regarding application.

We are committed to engaging more with patient and public views on medical education, and to explore the ways in which we can do so.

Why are we relevant and what do we do?

I believe that we are a standards organisation that works to define and enhance standards for medical education, thereby improving clinical care for patient benefit. Through this we provide advice, support and scholarly opportunities for our membership, we engage with patients and the public to involve them, and we aim to contribute to career development, structure and pathways for all involved in medical education.

I can summarise what we do under three headings: professional standards; membership and education.

Through the Professional Standards Committee, now led by Dr Ian Curran, the Academy has drawn up a set of Professional Standards that are now being used to set benchmarks both for membership of the Academy and for course providers nationally and internationally.

We have a newly-constituted Membership Committee, chaired by Professor Derek Gallen, which is developing routes for membership qualification, and also mutual recognition schemes with other organisations. Significant work has been done on accreditation routes for membership, and we will soon be in a position to publicise these.

Our Education Committee, chaired by Dr Diana Wood, will take responsibility for our annual and occasional educational meetings, and our communications for members and non-members, especially through our new website. Over the next few months the next phases of our website development will bring more interactive features; members’ areas, and more links to resources of relevant organisations. There is an increasing range of special interest groups for educators in addition to learned medical education societies such as ASME and AMEE. We are keen to work effectively with all of these, rather than in competition.

I hope you will enjoy browsing this site. Please read our Professional Standards and, if you are not a member, consider joining the AoME.

With best regards
